    Notes 
    • was a bricklayer and it was noticed that he had served an apprenticeship in Leicestershire. On 17th November 1915, Walter applied to be apart of the AIF to fight in World War I. His age on enlistment was given as 30 years, 1 month and he was living at George Street, Enfield, N.S.W. Details on his enlistment are : Height : 5ft, 7.5 in Weight : 133 lbs He was enlisted on 1st December 1915 at Casula, N.S.W. and appointed to the 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion. Pioneer battalions performed construction tasks in the forward area not requiring the special equipment of engineers, such as constructing trenches and dugouts although they occasionally acted in the engineer role on tasks such as the construction of bridges. They had a large proportion of tradesmen and were organised the same as infantry battalions. In a pinch they could and did serve as infantry in the front line. On 2 February 1916, the Australian government agreed to form a Third Division in Australia. The Third Division was formed in Australia in March 1916 and it moved to England to train in July 1916. In December 1916 it moved to France, becoming the last division to do so, taking over part of the 'nursery' sector near Armentieres. They embarked on the “Wandilla” 6th June 1916, in Melbourne, Victoria and disemarked in Plymouth, England 26th July 1916. Walter fought in France, until admitted to Hospital 2nd January 1917 suffering pnumonia. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Walter was discharged 15th August 1918.
